APPARATUS

1) TEST TUBES

A test tube, also known as a culture tube or sample tube, is a common piece of laboratory glassware consisting of a finger-like length of glass or clear plastic tubing, open at the top, usually with a rounded-shaped bottom.

USES

Test tubes are used by chemists in the lab to heat, hold and mix small quantities of liquid or solid chemicals during experiments. They have a round-bottom and are made of borosilicate glass to withstand temperature changes and resist the reaction of chemicals.

MAINTENANCE

Use of test tube racks.

2) TEST TUBE RACKS

A test tube rack is a wooden or plastic holder of test tubes in a laboratory. It has several small holes, each of which holds one test tube in an upright position.

USES

Used in laboratories to keep test tubes upright so that the equipment does not roll away, spill or become accidentally cracked.

3) BEAKERS

A beaker is a simple container for stirring, mixing and heating liquids commonly used in many laboratories. Beakers are generally cylindrical in shape, with a flat bottom. Most also have a small spout(or "beak") to aid pouring as shown in the picture. Beakers are available in a wide range of sizes, from one milliliter up to several liters.

USES

Beakers are commonly used in scientific research. They are usually used as containers in which to mix various liquids or as measuring devices. They are usually made with borosilicate glass which can handle rapid temperature changes. Beakers are commonly used in scientific research.

4) VOLUMETRIC FLASK

A
volumetric flask (measuring flask or graduated flask) is a piece of laboratory glassware, a type of laboratory flask, calibrated to contain a precise volume at a particular temperature.

USES

Volumetric flasks are used for precise dilutions and preparation of standard solutions. These flasks are usually pear-shaped, with a flat bottom, and made of glass or plastic.

5) ERLENMEYER FLASK

An
Erlenmeyer flask or conical flask is a type of laboratory flask which features a flat bottom, a conical body, and a cylindrical neck.

USES

An Erlenmeyer flask is used for the storing and mixing of chemicals in a laboratory setting. It is one of the most common flasks used within laboratories. These flasks are often made out of glass materials that are not reactive to chemicals. It will not spill as easily as flasks that do not have a flat bottom, and it must be placed in a storage rack. The flat bottom is much wider than the top and it is where the majority of chemicals will be stored.

6) GRADUATED CYLINDER

A graduated cylinder, measuring cylinder or mixing cylinder is a common piece of laboratory equipment used to measure the volume of a liquid. It has narrow cylindrical shape. Each marked line on the graduated cylinder represents the amount of liquid that has been measured.

USES

A Graduated Cylinder is a measuring tool used for science to measure exact amounts of a liquid or chemical.

7) BURET

A burette (also buret) is a device used in analytical chemistry for the dispensing of variable, measured amounts of a chemical solution. A volumetric burette delivers measured volumes of liquid. Pistonburettes are similar to syringes, but with precision bore and plunger. Piston burettes may be manually operated or may be motorized. A weight burette delivers measured weights of liquid.

USES

A burette is used in chemistry for the dispensing of measured amounts of a chemical solution.

8) PIPETTE

A
pipette (sometimes spelled pipet) or dropper is a laboratory tool commonly used in chemistry, biology and medicine to transport a measured volume of liquid, often as a media dispenser. Pipettes come in several designs for various purposes with differing levels of accuracy and precision, from single piece glass pipettes to more complex adjustable or electronic pipettes.

USES

A pipette is used in laboratories for the transfer or for measuring liquids (sometimes gases).

9) EVAPORATING DISH

An
evaporating dish is a piece of laboratory glassware used for the evaporation of solutions and supernatant liquids, and sometimes to their melting point. Evaporating dishes are used to evaporate excess solvents-most commonly water-to produce a concentrated solution or a solid precipitate of the dissolved substance.

USES

The evaporating dish is used to heat and evaporate liquids. This porcelain item resembles a shallow bowl with a spout. Evaporating dishes are traditionally used to evaporate... solvent to concentrate a solution; however, they can also be used to hold sand for a sand bath, as a small water bath, or as a drying dish (like a watch glass).

10) FUNNEL

FUNNEL

A tube or pipe that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, used for guiding liquid or powder into a small opening during experiments.

SEPARATING FUNNEL

A separating funnel (also called separation funnel) is a piece of laboratory equipment. It is usually made of glass and is used to separate two liquids, for example, oil and water. It's also known as separating funnel, or colloquially sep funnel. It is a piece of laboratory glassware used in liquid-liquid extractions to separate the components of a mixture into two immiscible solvent phases of different densities

BUCHNER FUNNEL

A Büchner funnel is a piece of laboratory equipment used in filtration. It is traditionally made of porcelain, but glass and plastic funnels are also available on which the flat filter paper is placed. On top of the funnel-shaped part, there is a cylinder with a fritted glass disc/perforated plate separating it from the funnel. Büchner funnel is one device used for pressure-assisted filtration.

11) BUCHNER FLASK

Buchner flasks, also known as vacuum flasks or side-arm flasks, are effectively thick-walled flasks with a short glass tube and hose barb extending from one side, which is used to connect equipment such as vacuums, aspirators and pumps to the flask via rubber tubingPreferably this is done through a trap, which is designed to prevent the sucking back of water from the aspirator into the Büchner flask.

USES

Used to filter samples.

12) MORTAR AND PESTLE

Is a device used to prepare ingredients or substances by crushing and grinding them into a fine paste or powder. The pestle is a heavy and blunt club-shaped object, the end of which is used for crushing and grinding.

13) CONDENSER

An apparatus or container for condensing vapor into liquid.

Equipment

1) CENTRIFUGE

Is a piece of equipment that puts an object in rotation around a fixed axis (spins it in a circle), applying a potentially strong force perpendicular to the axis of spin (outward). The centrifuge works using the sedimentation principle, where the centripetal acceleration causes denser substances and particles to move outward in the radial direction.

USES

A centrifuge is a laboratory device that is used for the separation of fluids, gas or liquid, based on density.

2) WATER BATH

A water bath is laboratory equipment made from container filled with heated water. It is used to incubate samples in water at a constant temperature over a long period of time.

USES

Used to keep water at consistent temperature for incubating samples in a laboratory.

3) SPECTROPHOTOMETER

Spectrophotometry is the quantitative measurement of the reflection or transmission properties of a material as a function of wavelength. It is more specific than the general term electromagnetic spectroscopy. Spectrophotometry is a tool that hinges on the quantitative analysis of molecules depending on how much light is absorbed by colored compounds.

USES

Used for the measurement of transmittance or reflectance of solutions, transparent solids, opaque solids, or gases.

4) BUNSEN BURNER

Laboratory equipment that produces a single open gas flame, which is used for heating, sterilization, and combustion.

The gas can be natural gas (mainly methane) or a liquid petroleum gas, such as propane, butane, or a mixture of both.
